Did You Know?

Gerald Ford was the only vice president who became president by ascension, secured his party's nomination, and then lost in the general election.
The United States of America has witnessed 48 vice presidents till date, the first being John Adams, and the current being Joe Biden. A vice president of the U.S. is granted certain powers and has some duties to perform as per the constitution.
The major function is to succeed the president in cases of his/her death, resignation, or impeachment. In addition to this, the vice president has the power to cast a tie-breaking vote on the decisions made by the Senate.
When it comes to U.S vice presidency, 2 amendments are considered very important. Firstly, the twelfth amendment, which was made to avoid ties in the process. The amendment gave power to the electoral college to elect both, the president and the vice president, and was ratified on June 15, 1804.
The next was the twenty-fifth amendment. Prior to 1967, a vacancy in the office of the vice president could not be filled until the next election. This amendment allowed a vacancy to be filled with the appointment by the president and confirmation from both chambers of Congress.
