The State of Utah is one of the western states of the United States. The name "Utah" in Ute, the language of the Native Indians, means " people of the mountains". The state joined the Union on January 4, 1896.

Famous Personalities of Utah

John Moses Browning (1855 - 1926)

He designed and developed automatic and semi-automatic guns. He also developed various types of firearms, cartridges, and gun mechanisms. Some of the machinery designed by him is still used around the world. Browning is credited with one hundred and twenty-eight gun patents.

Reva Beck Bosone (1895 - 1983)

She was the first woman from Utah to be elected to the US Congress. She was a lawyer and  was later appointed as the chairman of the Women's Army Corps Civilian Advisory Committee of the Ninth Service Command during the 2nd World War. She was elected as a Democrat representative from Utah, and served in the Congress from January 3, 1949, to January 3, 1953.

John Willard Marriott (1900 - 1985)

He was born at the Marriott Settlement in Utah. His father was a farmer, and John Marriott was raised in a farm, where he was given ample responsibility at an early age. He is one of the most successful American entrepreneurs, and is the founder of the Marriott Corporation, which is one of the world's largest chain of hotels and catering companies.
His firs business venture was a small beer parlor in Washington, D.C. in the year 1927. Currently, Marriott Corporation has 1,400 restaurants, and 143 hotels and resorts worldwide. He had become a billionaire by the time he died.

Philo Farnsworth (1906 - 1971)

Farnsworth was an American Inventor. He is famous for inventing the first ever completely electronic television. Philo Farnsworth also invented the "Video Camera Tube". He has been credited with over three hundred US and foreign patents.

Robert LeRoy Parker (1866 - 1908)

Robert Parker is also known as "Butch Cassidy". He was a famous outlaw, born in Beaver, Utah. Parker is famous for his notorious train and bank robberies. He was the leader of the "Hole in the Wall Gang". He was shot dead by the Bolivian police.

Wallace Stegner (1900 - 1993)

Stegner was an American novelist, environmentalist, and an American historian. He is often referred to as "The Dean of Western Writers". He was born in Iowa, but was brought up in Montana, Utah. His autobiography, 'Wolf Willow', is about his childhood.
Stegner's novel 'Angel of Repose' won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1972. His famous non-fiction work includes 'Beyond the Hundredth Meridian: John Wesley Powell and the Second Opening of the West'. It is a biography of John Wesley Powell, who explored the Colorado River.
