Albert Arnold Gore Jr. or Al Gore as he is popularly referred to, is a philanthropist and environmental activist from America. This ex-Vice President of the United States, served from 1993 to 2001 in the Clinton administration. He has been actively involved in the battle against global warming.

Al Gore is a multifaceted personality. His international recognition springs from his authorship, contribution to the global business rostrum, earning a Nobel Prize and his passion for journalism. He has designed and circulated many documentaries addressing the global warming concern, including the 2006, 'An Inconvenient Truth', which won an Oscar. The audio version won the documentary a Grammy Award too, in February, 2009.

Family Life

Albert Gore, Jr. was born on March 31, 1948, in Washington, D.C. His father Albert Gore, Sr. was a U.S. Representative and Senator, while his mother Pauline LaFon Gore was among the first few women who graduated from Vanderbilt University Law School. He had one sibling, a sister, Nancy LaFon Gore, who succumbed to lung cancer in 1984.

The family moved back and forth, between Washington, D.C. and Tennessee on account of his parents' responsibilities towards the law and government. Gore studied at St. Albans School between 1956 and 1965. He was a member of the varsity American football team, and an active participant in field sports like discus throwing and basketball.

Gore attended Harvard University in 1965, and signed up for a climate science course in 1967, organized by Roger Revelle. This was the triggering factor in his life―an exposure to global issues and possible remedies, that made him an activist and dedicated journalist. Gore also took a course in political science and majored in government. He has always voiced for the promotion of civil and women's rights. He volunteered for two years as a part of the United States Army, during the Vietnam War.

Al Gore and Global Warming

Gore consistently addresses concerns over technological issues arising out of genetic engineering and biomedical research, and most importantly, the 'greenhouse effect'. He advocates the use of technology to coordinate government response to natural disasters and related crises.

As a member of the House of Representatives, Gore headed the first ever congressional hearing on toxic waste, climate change, and global warming. He went on to address a three-day conference on economic development via environment conservation, implied in the year 1990.

Gore's dedication to the case of environmental conservation is best viewed in the following initiatives: His role as an Atari Democrat, promoting the dot-com boom, and simultaneously, biotechnology. Launching of Earth Day '94, within the GLOBE program, promoting education to increase awareness of sensitive environmental issues.

Support to the Kyoto Protocol, which addressed the vital reduction in global emissions of greenhouse gases. Promotion of a NASA satellite, to monitor the 'Health of the Earth'.

Al Gore Today

Albert Arnold Gore Jr. has been a part of American politics for more than two decades, as a part of the House of Representatives, Senate and Democratic Representation. He is the recipient of Webby Award in the year 2005, and was also listed as a runner-up for Time Magazine's '2007 Person of the Year'. Currently, Al Gore chairs the Alliance for Climate Protection, Generation Investment Management and Current TV.

He is also on the Apple Inc. Board of Directors and is a Google Search Engine Senior Adviser. Al Gore is a visiting faculty member at Middle Tennessee State University, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, University of California, and Fisk University.
